What is a wall mount rack?

A wall mount rack is used for racking and protecting network equipment such as patch panels and switches. They come in a range of shapes and sizes, and are designed to be easy to install.

Wall mount racks come in two different styles: open frame racks and cabinet racks. Open frame racks are easier to install and manage, however they are less secure than cabinets and more vulnerable to tampering.

What are the advantages of a wall mounted rack server?

There are numerous advantages to using a wall mounted rack.

Save floor space

Perhaps the most obvious advantage of using wall mounted racks is the fact that they allow for better space conservation. If you have limited space, it’s not always practical to store a 1 metre tall cabinet on your office floor. A rack mounted server means that you can conserve your room’s floor space by storing all of your equipment together by mounting it on the wall.

You can also adjust the height of the rack to ensure easy access or seamlessly slot it alongside another unit. This versatility is particularly useful for instances where other devices in the room need to be connected to the rack.

Prevent overheating

By incorporating fans and ventilation, rack mounted servers are designed to maximise air flow. This helps minimise the risk of overheating, protecting your equipment from environmental changes.

Protect valuable equipment from dust, dirt and other environmental risks

Its enclosed design means that wall mount cabinets actively shield the sensitive equipment from dust, debris and dirt. This helps ensure the longevity of equipment, which will ultimately save you the costs associated with frequent maintenance and replacements.

Ensure network equipment is well-organised

If you need to check a specific problem or update your system, it’s much easier to identify each individual cable then the system is well-maintained. Storing equipment in a rack mounted server provides you with the necessary tools to keep your equipment secure and accessible in one central location.

What does RU mean in the context of server racks?

RU (often abbreviated to a single U) stands for Rack Unit. It is a standard measurement that refers to the height of a piece of networking equipment. One RU equates to 1.75 inches.

So, how do you know what RU your system needs?

When investing in a wall mount rack, it’s important to purchase for the system of tomorrow rather than today. Planning ahead can ultimately save you more money and time spent on cable management. As a general rule of thumb, at least 30% of the server rack’s internal height should be left vacant to accommodate for future growth.

How much weight can a wall mount rack hold?

The amount of weight a wall mount rack can hold will depend on its model. The typical loading capacity of a wall mount rack is 65 kilograms, but it’s always recommended to confirm the capacity for the individual model you are interested in before purchasing.
